BASIC Kayak navigation course

Perfect for beginners and intermediate paddlers, this 6-hour basic sea kayak navigation course combines a theoretical and a practical session to build your confidence in navigating both on and off the water.

The day will begin with a session on navigation theory and trip planning. You’ll learn to use nautical charts, interpret key symbols, plot routes, understand compass bearings, and plan safe routes while identifying potential hazards. We’ll also cover the basics of weather forecasting, including reading forecasts and understanding how weather impacts sea kayaking conditions.

In the second half of the course, we’ll head out onto the water in our kayaks to apply what you’ve learned in a real-world setting. You’ll practice following a planned route, using a map and compass, navigating between points, and making decisions based on actual conditions like wind and waves. By the end of the day, you’ll feel confident in your ability to plan trips and navigate safely on your own in calm sea conditions.
