Build Confidence and Skills in Lofoten’s Tidal Waters.
Tidal current basics kayak COURSE
Our course center is perfectly located in the Lofoten Islands, home to some of Norway’s most dynamic tidal currents. With streams reaching speeds of 4-6 knots in areas like Moskenesstraumen, Nappstraumen, and Gimsøystraumen, the region offers powerful flows, eddies, and tide races—ideal for tidal paddling. Additionally, the area features smaller, gentle tidal channels that provide a safe and controlled environment, perfect for practicing and developing essential skills. For those seeking a challenge, we also offer a multi day expedition that includes crossing Moskenesstraumen, one of the biggest tidal ocean currents in the world.
This 2-day course is perfect for intermediate paddlers looking to gain confidence and learn the essential skills for kayaking safely in slow-flowing tidal waters and gentle ocean currents.
We will start with an introduction to tidal theory, including how tides work, how to read tide tables, and how to identify potential risks in tidal environments. From there, we’ll work on practical techniques such as positioning in the current, ferry gliding, eddy turns, and maintaining control in moving water.
Hands-on practice will be combined with rescue skills to ensure you feel safe and capable in these tidal conditions.
By the end of the course, you’ll have the skills to confidently paddle in areas with slow flowing tidal currents, understand how to plan safe trips, and be prepared for future expeditions in dynamic coastal waters
